ON THE ROAD BACK HOME
How Dad's should feel when returning from being away.

Back home again
with kids and wife and dogs.
The journey's ended
and I pause now to blog...

..to reflect on travel, on men,
and return to family.
To present my view of how
things surely ought to be.

Their running toward me now.
Lots of hugging and kissing
and telling me what all
I've been missing.

The news is coming
from each of the kids
like popcorn popping
out of the lid.

Ones had a fall
and cut their knee.
The other is sharing
good news with glee.

The wife is as charming
and as beautiful--it's true!
As the first day we met
in the years of our youth.

House still goes, "Creeeek and craaack,"
as before I left.
"Sounds like my bones,"
I laugh to myself.

The weather's a tad warmer
in fact its too hot,
But Winter will come soon
and we'll wish for this lot.

Not much has really changed
while I've been away.
Only me, on the inside,
and I like it that way.

Out here on the porch
the place feels just right.
The morning is calm
after a sound sleep last night.

Hot coffee in hand,
sweet jelly on bread,
bills to be paid,
and letters to be read.

Certainly, it's better to be back
than out on the road alone.
Hot coffee's always best
when it's taken at home.
